The Stock Exchange and the Rostral columns

Strolling along the embankments of the Basil island spit, where you will meet a lot of just married couples, you can enjoy a tremendous view of the Winter Palace and the Neva river in its widest part. It is definitely not easy to figure out the history of this sunlit beautiful place during the early days of St.-Petersburg, when everything here served a particular purpose: the spit served as a place to unload cargo from arriving ships, the wares were controlled by the customs, situated nearby in yellow and white classical building with a small dome (currently the Institute and the Museum of Russian literature) and were sold in the Stock Exchange – the ostendous building right opposite the spit reminds of Ancient Greek temples (today: the Navy Museum). Beautiful Rostral Columns, decorated by four figures representing main rivers of Russia, used to be lighthouses (today they are only lit on festivals).

A recently opened tourist attraction is a floating fountain, where on the weekend you can enjoy classical music.
