PGD principle
The PGD principle is to detect genetic disorders in embryos, before they are transferred into the uterus. After PGD only the embryos having no genetic disorders or having them in a balanced condition may be transferred into the uterus.
The objective of PGD is conception of a healthy fetus.
PGD is especially important for the carriers of balanced chromosome translocation. It helps to prevent the transfer into the uterus of genetically abnormal embryo and thus to avoid pregnancy loss or delivery of a child with a hard hereditary disease. The need for PGD results in indication for IVF. IVF provides an opportunity to check the embryos before they are transferred into the uterus.
If, during prenatal diagnostics a fetal genetic disease is revealed, pregnancy termination may be required. PGD is aimed at conceiving a healthy fetus.
