Ovulation and follicular puncture
FSH is injected until the follicles reach thair mature size. After this, HCG is used to stimulate ovulation. The effects of HCG are almost identical to those of LH in the natural cycle. About 36 hours after HCG injection the oocytes are retrieved from the follicles (follicular puncture) just before ovulation (Fig. 1). On the same day a partner delivers sperm for fertilization.

HCG is extracted either from a pregnant woman's uterine or by using biotechnologies. Oocyte retrieval is performed before ovulation, since after ovulation the oocyte will come into the fallopian tube or abdominal cavity, thus becoming almost unavailable.

Follicle retrieval is performed via the vagina under ultrasound guidance. The procedure can be made under local or general anesthesia. In our clinic we prefer general anesthesia. After the procedure minor pains and small vaginal bleeding can be observed. The procedure does not require hospitalization and is performed in outpatient conditions. After a patient is awake the operation results are discussed, and the couple is free to go home.
