Egg donation at AVA-Peter

Egg donation at AVA-Peter is made as easy and stress-free as possible. This is particularly important for patients coming from other countries. You will need to visit our clinic in St. Petersburg either one or two times: once for our initial tests (unless these can be done by your local specialist) and then for the treatment itself.
Initial Consultation or Shared Care Programme?

Before we can treat you, we need to know your relevant medical history and perform a number of tests. We have found that thorough investigation of each patient, including the reasons for infertility, enables us to offer a higher probability of success. It also means that we can treat our patients in an extremely individual manner. There are two ways of obtaining this information: during an Initial Consultation or via our Shared Care Programme.
Until recently, all our patients first came to Ava-Peter for the Initial Consultation and then returned again 2 months later for the embryo transfer. This meant coming to St. Petersburg twice. With the Shared Care Programme, you need only come to St. Petersburg once: for the Embryo Transfer itself. This is only possible if you have a local doctor who is able to perform the initial tests and liaise with us about the results, prescribe the required medication and do the ultrasound follow-up before you come for the Embryo Transfer.
How long will you need to stay in St. Petersburg?
If you visit us for an Initial Consultation, you only need to spend 1 day and 1 night in St. Petersburg for this first visit. We do not recommend flying in and out on the same day as this puts you under too much time pressure and does not allow you to make the most of your visit. Most of our patients prefer to spend the night before and/or after the Initial Consultation in a local hotel to avoid rushing around and getting stressed by any travel delays or other problems. This also enables you to become comfortable with the trip, the city, our clinic and our doctors, thereby reducing the emotional strain of the whole procedure.

The duration of the second visit depends on whether your partner provides sperm on the day of the Initial Consulation. If you prefer to use fresh sperm, your partner needs to plan his arrival in St. Petersburg 2 days in advance of the planned date for Egg Collection. The actual Egg Collection date can vary 2 days on either side of this date, which is why it is advisable to arrive in advance. The eggs are fertilised with the sperm on the same day that they are collected, and then the embryos are grown in the AVA-Peter laboratory for (usually) 3 or 5 days. Because of the variations possible in the Egg Collection date and the Embryo Transfer date, you will need to spend a total of 9 days in St. Petersburg. (Fortunately, it is a wonderful city!)
Alternatively, your partner can provide sperm on the day of the Initial Consulation. This can be frozen and then defrosted to fertilise the donor’s eggs on the day of Egg Collection. In this case, you will need to arrive 2 days before the planned Embryo Transfer date and will only need to spend 5 days in St. Petersburg.
If you choose the Shared Care Programme and therefore do not come to AVA-Peter for an Initial Consultation, your partner will not have the opportunity to provide sperm for freezing. You will need to spend a total of 9 days in our lovely city to provide sperm and wait for the best day for the Embryo Transfer.
The Initial Consultation
In order to assess our patients properly, we normally ask both partners to come to St. Petersburg for an Initial Consultation at Ava-Peter. We realise that this involves a certain amount of time, effort and expense, but it allows us to give you the best possible chance of success. At the Initial Consultation, we take blood and semen samples, check for any infections, perform a smear test and assess the condition of the endometrium. We also take photos of you to ensure a good match with the egg donor, and discuss the procedure thoroughly.
Assuming all is well, we will spend the next few weeks searching for a donor and liaising with possible donors about the dates they might be available. Before you leave the clinic, we give you a prescription for the medications you need. You can obtain these in our on-site pharmacy. They do not need to be kept chilled so you can take them back to your home country simply by packing them carefully in your hand luggage. Just remember to keep the Treatment Plan with you when passing Customs. As you now have all the medication you need, you will be ready to start treatment once you confirm that you are happy with the donor we have matched you to. This means you can normally start treatment within a few weeks of the Initial Consultation.
Sometimes we first need to treat a hormonal or other abnormality before starting egg donation, and your treatment will be personalised accordingly. Occasionally we find that a patient who comes to us will not be able to have a child even with egg donation treatment. This is very sad, but we prefer to tell them this honestly at an early stage rather than let them undergo treatment with no chance of success.

Our Shared Care Programme

Recently it has become possible for some patients to have the necessary tests done in their local clinic under our Shared Care Programme. This involves your local fertility clinic working with us to supply the results we require, and to provide you with the drugs you need. All the data is sent to us to assess in St. Petersburg, and we discuss your treatment with your local clinic.
If your local clinic is prepared to support you in this way, you only need to travel to St. Petersburg once: simply for the Embryo Transfer itself.
